Now producing products for home gyms, light commercial, and full commercial, it’s difficult to figure out which product is right for you.

Body Solid currently produces 6-different power racks which each offer their own unique price point, features, and options. Making the right decision when choosing your body solid power rack can improve your satisfaction and save you thousands of dollars down the road. This article will offer a comparison between the different power racks.

Why You Need a Power Rack

A power rack or otherwise known as a power cage, is a fundamental piece of exercise equipment for any home gym, personal training studio, or fitness club. For the safety of members, clients, and yourself, having a power rack can provide the perfect place for compound movements when a spotter is not available. But that isn’t all that a power rack can do.

More Than Compound Lifts

Power racks have become the foundation for many bodyweight and resistance exercises. You should first understand the type of workouts you will perform before you purchase a power rack. Any power rack works for those planning to follow a basic lifting program, but if planning to use it for a variety of exercises, your choices will be limited.

Power Rack Vs. Squat Rack

Also called a half rack, there is nothing wrong with a high quality squat rack. In fact, many now come with spotter arms which are like safety bars helping you stay safe during heavy lifts. Power Racks, however, may add an increased level of safety as it evenly distributes the weight from front to back. This may prevent the rack from tipping over when the weight lands on the front side of the safeties.

If you only have a minimal amount of space in your garage gym, then a squat stand or half rack is an acceptable option. But for maximum safety you will need a power cage that does not allow you or the barbell to escape from during a failed lift.

Body Solid Power Rack Features

All the options that Body Solid currently has available comes with the standard features you would expect.

  1. Power Rack Pins / J-cups: Your barbell will need something to sit on when not lifting it. All the power racks come with one of these options.
  2. Safety Bars: The major benefit of a power rack is the ability to provide a safe environment for heavy lifts. They equipped all power racks with safety bars but how specific you can get will depend upon the rack you choose. Some will have 1,2 or 3 (verify) inch hole spacing. The closer the spacing, the more exact you can get with safety.
  3. Pull up / Chin up bar: Each power rack will come with a standard bar across the top. This is not only great for pull ups and chin ups but works as a place to attach other items such as suspension straps or high cable pulleys.

How Each Body Solid Power Rack Is Different

As Body Solid continues to develop power racks, they look for ways to satisfy a specific customer. With each person having a specific budget and need from their power rack, they give each lifter an option appropriately fit for their financial and fitness needs.

How Much Weight Will You Lift?

While we all have ambitions to lift heavy weights, it is best to be honest about your current and future levels of strength. Many people purchase power racks with the largest weight capacity possible because it makes them feel like it is a better fit for their big lifting dreams. If you want the added safety of a high weight capacity power rack, that is fine. But don’t blow your budget because you think more is better no matter how strong you will be.

How Exact Do You Need The Hole Spacing?

Getting the safeties as close as possible to the bottom points of your lift will prevent potential injuries from occurring. The heavier the weight and closer you plan to lift to failure should determine how exact you need to be.

Closer spacing will also allow for a more comfortable starting point for squats and bench press. Unless you have a spotter, having to push up with your arms from a static position can be uncomfortable. Also uncomfortable is when you must bend your knees when racking a bar from a set of squats.

How Sturdy A Power Rack Do You Need?

The heavier your power rack is, the less chance it will tip over for any reason. What is perhaps more important though is that the more sturdy your rack, the more additional exercise options you will have. Using a landmine attachment, suspension straps, or jammer arms will require your rack to be weighed down to the point it doesn’t move as the weight shifts.

One work around to keeping a lighter rack stable is to add weight horns and plates to the back of your rack. This can add a significant amount of sturdiness to your rack.

How Much Space Do You Have Available?

Before you purchase any rack, make sure you have enough room for the power rack, barbell, and any additional exercises you plan to use with the rack.

What Else Will You Use the Power Rack For?

Many Body Solid Power Racks have additional options for increasing exercise selection. Once you understand your hole spacing and width/depth of the uprights, you can find Body Solid accessories for your power rack. There may be options from other companies but it is best to choose a rack with the Body Solid accessories you need. This way you stay within their product warranty.
